Not too many people outside of Great Britain would have heard of Johanna Konta six months ago. The 24-year-old British-Australian scored two top-20 wins over Ekaterina Makarova and Garbine Muguruza on her way to the quarterfinals of Eastbourne in June, but she finished the grass-court season well outside the top 100 after losing 6-2, 6-2 to Maria Sharapova in the first round of Wimbledon and seemed to have found her level in the 110-160 range of the rankings.

That loss to Sharapova was the last poor one Konta would suffer, however, as the British player embarked on a remarkable run that saw her win 21 of her next 22 matches. Konta won ten matches in a row to collect ITF titles in Granby and Vancouver in late July and August before qualifying for the US Open and going on to beat Louisa Chirico, ninth seed and Wimbledon runner-up Muguruza and 18th seed Andrea Petkovic before losing 5-7, 3-6 to Petra Kvitova in the round of 16.
